Retrofit concepts
Yesterday’s ships were often designed and optimised for operating conditions that were different from the conditions they operate under today. As an example, many container ships were designed for a speed above 20 knots but are today operated at 15-16 knots. If the ships were designed for today’s operating profile from the beginning, the fuel consumption would be lower – typically between 5-30%. Yesterday’s ships are also missing some of the latest developments with respect to propellers, rudders and energy-saving devices.
New restrictions on CO2, SOx and NOx emissions represent another challenge for yesterday’s ships and their owners. Technologies and solutions that will make these ships comply with these new restrictions are available – but they do represent significant investments.
The biggest immediate potential for fuel and emission savings per transported cargo unit is not related to the ships we will build next year but is related to the ships we have built during the past 10-15 years.
The challenge is obvious. How should yesterday’s fleet be optimised to meet today’s operational reality?
While the current fleet is relatively new, too much capital is tied up to consider scrapping. The real challenge for the owners is how to preserve asset value.
OMT is committed to this challenge and has developed standard retrofit solutions for different ship types. Many of the solutions are already implemented on existing ships.
OMT’s scope of delivery includes engineering, material packages and yard supervision. OMT aims for economies of scale on these conventional retrofits and has developed standard processes to reduce total cost, lead time and risk for our customers.
